Airing from 1959 to 1973, the series followed the Cartwright family as they managed the legendary Ponderosa Ranch in Nevada. With its mix of family drama, adventure, and moral lessons, the show became a television phenomenon and helped define an entire era of American entertainment.See More…

The original cast included legendary actors such as Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Dan Blocker, and Pernell Roberts. Over the decades, fans sadly said goodbye to nearly all of the show’s biggest stars, making many wonder whether anyone from the famous cast is still with us today.

The answer may surprise longtime viewers. As of 2026, only two major actors from Bonanza are still alive: Tim Matheson and Mitch Vogel. Both joined the series during its later years and became memorable parts of the show’s final chapters.

Tim Matheson portrayed Griff King, a former convict who was given a second chance working on the Ponderosa. After Bonanza, he built a long and successful Hollywood career, appearing in numerous films and television series. Even decades later, he has remained active in the entertainment industry, becoming one of the most recognizable surviving stars connected to the show.

Mitch Vogel played Jamie Hunter Cartwright, an orphan who was eventually adopted into the Cartwright family. He joined the cast as a teenager and quickly became a fan favorite. Unlike many child actors, Vogel later stepped away from Hollywood and chose a quieter life, making his story one of the most intriguing among the surviving members of the Bonanza family.

One little-known fact is that Vogel was only around 14 years old when he joined Bonanza, making him one of the youngest major cast members in the show’s history. His youthful energy helped bring a fresh dynamic to the series during its final seasons.

More than fifty years after the final episode aired, Bonanza continues to attract new generations of viewers.
