She joined Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, and together they formed a group originally known as The Primettes. The group would later change its name and become famous around the world as The Supremes.

In 1961, The Supremes signed with Motown Records, one of the most influential record companies in American music. Their early years were not easy. Several of their first releases failed to become major hits, but the group continued working and performing.

Everything changed in 1964 when “Where Did Our Love Go” became a huge success. It was followed by unforgettable songs such as “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” and “You Can’t Hurry Love.”

Diana gradually became the lead voice and most recognizable member of the group. Her elegant appearance, distinctive voice, and stage presence helped make The Supremes one of Motown’s biggest acts.

The success of The Supremes was extraordinary. The group eventually achieved 12 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, making them one of the most successful female groups in music history.

But enormous success also brought changes and challenges. The group went through lineup changes, and the relationships between its members became increasingly complicated. In 1970, Diana Ross left The Supremes and began building her career as a solo artist.

Leaving one of the biggest groups in America was a major risk, but Diana quickly proved that she could succeed on her own. Her first solo album included “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which became her first No. 1 hit as a solo artist.

Diana did not limit herself to music. She also entered Hollywood and took on one of the most demanding roles of her career when she portrayed legendary singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues.

Her performance earned Diana an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her transition from music star to serious film actress one of the most memorable chapters of her career.

She later starred in Mahogany, a film about a young woman who dreams of becoming a fashion designer. The movie allowed Diana to combine several of her talents, including acting, fashion, music, and performance.

In 1975, Diana appeared on Broadway in The Wiz, playing Dorothy. The production became an important part of African-American entertainment history and later became a major motion picture.

Throughout the late 1970s, Diana continued releasing major hits. “Love Hangover” became one of her signature songs, while her ability to move between soul, pop, disco, and R&B helped her remain relevant as musical trends changed.

In 1980, Diana made another major career move. She left Motown and signed a reported $20 million contract with RCA, which was described at the time as one of the largest recording contracts ever given to a solo artist.

One of the biggest moments of the following decade came in 1981 with “Endless Love,” her famous duet with Lionel Richie. The song became a massive international hit and remains one of the most remembered romantic duets of its era.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Diana continued recording, touring, performing on television, and releasing new music. The music industry was changing rapidly, but she remained a major name with generations of fans.

The Supremes’ legacy was also officially recognized. In 1988, The Supremes were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their place in American music history.

Diana’s individual achievements continued to grow. She received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007, recognizing her contribution to American culture through the performing arts.

In 2012, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring her extraordinary career and lasting contribution to recorded music.

Even after decades in the spotlight, Diana continued performing and creating music. In 2021, she released the album Thank You, showing that her connection with music and her audience remained strong.

Diana Ross’s story is much bigger than a collection of hit songs. She went from a young girl in Detroit to the lead singer of The Supremes, then became a successful solo artist, actress, performer, and cultural icon. After more than six decades in entertainment, her name remains closely connected with some of the most important moments in American popular music.

Diana Ross was born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan.
