Originally from Roseville, California, Gee served as a ground electronics transmission technician with Combat Logistics Battalion 24, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. She had worked hard to build her military career and had been meritoriously promoted to sergeant in Kuwait just weeks before arriving in Kabul, Afghanistan.

3. In August 2021, Gee was deployed to Hamid Karzai International Airport as American forces worked to evacuate U.S. citizens and vulnerable Afghan civilians following the Taliban’s rapid takeover of the country.

4. The situation at the airport was desperate. Thousands of people gathered near the gates, hoping to escape the escalating danger. Families arrived frightened and exhausted, many uncertain whether they would ever see their homes again.

5. Gee was assigned to a Female Engagement Team, where she helped screen Afghan women and children. Because of cultural sensitivities surrounding searches conducted by male personnel, female service members played an essential role in assisting women and families during the evacuation.

6. Her responsibilities went beyond security screening. She helped guide evacuees, supported crowd-control efforts, and assisted vulnerable families trying to reach processing areas and departing aircraft. Amid the confusion, her work helped people navigate an overwhelming and frightening situation.

7. Then came the photograph that would make her known around the world. In the image, Gee is seen gently cradling an infant while carrying out her duties at an airport checkpoint. Surrounded by uncertainty and fear, the photograph captured a quiet moment of humanity.

8. Just days before her death, Gee shared the photograph on social media with three simple words: “I love my job.” Those words resonated with people across the United States and beyond, offering a glimpse into the dedication she brought to her service.

9. Behind that photograph was a young woman committed to helping others. Accounts of the evacuation describe female service members working demanding shifts under extraordinary pressure, assisting frightened women and children while trying to maintain security in an increasingly dangerous environment.

10. The evacuation ultimately became one of the largest airlift operations in U.S. history. American forces and their partners helped evacuate more than 124,000 people from Afghanistan. Female service members, including Gee and her fellow Marines, played an important role in helping vulnerable families reach safety.

11. But the operation carried enormous risks. On August 26, 2021, an ISIS-K suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near Abbey Gate, one of the main access points to the Kabul airport. The blast devastated the area where American personnel and Afghan civilians had gathered.

12. Thirteen U.S. service members were killed in the attack, including 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army soldier. Approximately 170 Afghan civilians also lost their lives, turning an already desperate evacuation into an even greater tragedy.

13. Sergeant Nicole L. Gee was among the 13 American service members killed that day. She was performing her duties during the evacuation when the bombing took her life. She was just 23 years old.

14. Her death left her husband, family, friends, and fellow Marines to face an unimaginable loss. Yet the photograph of Gee holding that infant remains a powerful reminder that military service is not only about uniforms, operations, or missions. It is also about the people who need help and the individuals who step forward to provide it.

15. Years later, Nicole Gee is remembered for her dedication, her compassion, and the lives she helped protect during those final days in Kabul. Her story reminds us that behind every uniform is a human being, with loved ones waiting at home and a life full of hopes and dreams.

Rest in peace, Sergeant Nicole L. Gee. Your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

1. She was only 23 years old, serving her country thousands of miles from home.
