For six seasons, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley gave us some of the funniest moments ever put on television. And let’s face it: if Lucy Ricardo had an idea, you could pretty much guarantee Ricky would need an aspirin before the day was over… See more…

Who could forget Lucy and Ethel getting jobs at the candy factory? That episode, called “Job Switching,” first aired on September 15, 1952. Everything was going just fine until somebody decided that conveyor belt wasn’t moving fast enough. Suddenly, chocolates were flying into mouths, hats, and down the fronts of their uniforms. Those two were stuffing candy anywhere they could find an opening! I don’t know who thought putting Lucy Ricardo near a moving conveyor belt was a good idea, but they certainly deserved a raise for giving us that much laughter!

And then there was Vitameatavegamin! Lucy was supposed to sell a health tonic on television, but nobody bothered to warn her that the stuff contained 23 percent alcohol. By the time she finished rehearsing, she couldn’t pronounce the product’s name, much less remember why anyone should buy it. She started out selling vitamins and ended up looking like she’d spent the afternoon at the neighborhood tavern!

Remember Lucy stomping grapes in Italy? She climbed into that enormous vat thinking she was learning something about making wine. Before long, she and another woman were wrestling around in grape juice like two kids fighting over the last piece of birthday cake. By the time they finished, Lucy looked like she’d been dragged backward through a vineyard!

Then there was the time Lucy and Ethel bought a freezer full of meat. Not a few steaks or a Sunday roast. Enough meat to feed half of New York City! Lucy ended up trapped in the freezer, and the whole business became another Ricardo household emergency. I swear, that woman couldn’t buy groceries without turning it into a national disaster.

And who remembers Lucy getting handcuffed to Ricky? Naturally, there wasn’t a key! Nothing says a happy marriage quite like being chained to your husband when he has somewhere important to be.

What made I Love Lucy so wonderful was that you could see the trouble coming a mile away, but you couldn’t stop watching. Lucy would get that little look in her eye, Ethel would reluctantly go along with another ridiculous plan, Fred would complain about the money, and Ricky would eventually lose his patience.

And somehow, no matter how many times we’ve watched these episodes, they’re still funny. We know the candy belt will speed up. We know that health tonic will get Lucy into trouble. We know Ricky will be furious. Yet we’re sitting there laughing just as hard as we did the first time.

Seventy-five years after its premiere, I Love Lucy still proves that great comedy never gets old.

On October 15, 1951, I Love Lucy premiered on CBS, and television was never quite the same.
