A story from South Africa is being called one of the most unbelievable medical shocks of 2025. A man who spent more than a decade completely trapped inside his own body — unable to speak, move, or react — has finally shared the truth of what he lived through.See More…
Back in 1988, 12-year-old Martin Pistorius fell ill with what seemed like nothing more than a sore throat. Within days, his condition spiraled, and he was rushed to hospital. The diagnosis stunned his family: severe cryptococcal meningitis combined with tuberculosis in the brain. Treatments failed, and his body gradually shut down until he slipped into what doctors believed was a permanent, unresponsive state.
For four long years, Martin appeared to be completely unreachable. Experts told his devastated parents he likely wouldn’t survive much longer. What nobody knew was that Martin’s mind had slowly switched back on — yet he had no way to express that he was fully aware of everything happening around him.
He later described that period as “a feeling of not existing,” explaining how every decision about his life — from what he wore to when he was fed — was made without any way for him to respond. He vividly remembered listening to conversations about his changing body as he got older, even though in his mind he still felt like a child.
The turning point came in 2001, when Martin, then 25, met therapist Virna van der Walt at his care center. She noticed something no one else had: a spark of awareness in his expression. Her suspicion led his family to the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication at the University of Pretoria, where specialists finally confirmed it — Martin was conscious.
A communication computer was eventually introduced into his life, allowing him to select words using a head-controlled device. For the first time in more than a decade, he could “speak.”
Now age 50, Martin has transformed his life in ways nobody imagined possible. He earned a first-class degree in computer science, learned to drive, and built a family with his wife, Joanna. In a recent Instagram update, Martin shared his gratitude, saying that everything he has achieved is thanks to the people who never gave up on him.
