According to police, two armed individuals fired into the crowd from a public park adjacent to the beach at around 6:47 PM local time. People attending the event were forced to run for cover as shots rang out, with several caught in the line of fire before police and emergency services arrived.
Australian authorities confirmed that at least 12 people were killed and around 29 others were wounded, including several officers who responded to the scene. One of the suspected shooters was reportedly killed by police, while the second suspect was taken into custody and is critically injured.
Officials have described the incident as an act of terrorism with antisemitic motivations. Police are investigating the possibility that the attackers specifically targeted the Jewish community gathered for the holiday event, and authorities have urged residents to stay indoors as the investigation continues.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “brutal act of hate and terror.” Leaders from around the world expressed condolences and support for Australia, while local emergency services worked overnight to secure the scene and assist victims.
Video footage circulating online and captured by bystanders shows frantic crowds fleeing and first responders attending to the wounded. In some clips, a civilian appears to intervene to disarm one of the shooters — an act that has since been highlighted as courageous amid the violence.
