The man dressed in black has been identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram, while the other man wearing white trousers is the second perpetrator, whose identity is still being investigated as authorities gather evidence to confirm who he is.
Meanwhile, police have raided the home of one of the suspects, where weapons, explosives, documents, and other materials of investigative interest have been discovered so far.
Authorities are also verifying the possible involvement of a third accomplice in the crime. One of the attackers was killed, while the other, the 24-year-old, was seriously injured.
Among the victims were a rabbi and a 10-year-old child. The target of the attack was the Jewish community in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney, where the Hanukkah holiday was being celebrated.
Sunday’s attack is the deadliest incident of its kind in the country since 1996, when a gunman killed 35 people at a tourist site in the southern state of Tasmania.
Videos circulating on social media showed people on the beach and in a nearby park fleeing, as multiple gunshots and police sirens could be heard. One video showed a man dressed in a black shirt firing a long gun before being neutralized by a man in a white T-shirt, who managed to take the weapon from him. Another man was seen firing a weapon from a pedestrian bridge.
A separate video showed two men lying on the ground and being restrained by uniformed police officers on a small pedestrian bridge.
The attack occurred almost exactly 11 years after a gunman took 18 people hostage at the Lindt Café in Sydney.
