The incident occurred in the early morning around 7:21 a.m. near 42 Spring Street, when the vehicle driven by 41‑year‑old Shannon N. Godbout veered out of its lane and hit several objects, including telephone poles, before striking MacLeod on the shoulder of the roadway where he was walking with his dogs.
Police reports state that Godbout was found at the scene in possession of illegal narcotics and drug distribution materials. She has a long criminal history including over 100 prior arrests, with 82 court warrants and more than 40 traffic citations, according to police. Godbout was arrested and faces preliminary charges including driving so as to endanger resulting in death and possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
MacLeod was widely recognized for his work as a bassist with Roomful of Blues, an influential American jump blues and swing band that received multiple Grammy nominations during its career. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2012 in recognition of his contributions to music.

Beyond his recording and performance career, MacLeod and his wife, Sandol Astrausky, were active in the broader music community.
