Hollandโs death, confirmed by multiple major news outlets, marks a significant moment for the LDS community. As the second longestโserving apostle in the Quorum after President Dallin H. Oaks, Holland had been next in line to lead the Church under its established succession system.
Born on December 3, 1940, in St. George, Utah, Holland had a long and influential career within the Church and in education. He served as the ninth president of Brigham Young University (BYU) from 1980 to 1989 before being called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in June 1994. During his tenure, he was widely respected for his academic backgroundโhaving earned degrees from both Brigham Young University and Yale Universityโand for his deep commitment to the teachings of his faith.
Church officials revealed that Holland had been hospitalized over the Christmas holiday due to ongoing health challenges. In recent months his health had declined, and he used a wheelchair at some public events, prompting concern among members and followers.
Holland was known among Latterโday Saints and beyond for his powerful sermons, commitment to religious education, and global missionary outreach. He often spoke on themes of faith, resilience, and devotion, leaving a lasting impact on both church members and students during his long career.
He is survived by his three children, thirteen grandchildren, and multiple greatโgrandchildren. His wife, Patricia Terry Holland, preceded him in death in July 2023. Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced by LDS Church leadership in the coming days.
