French army general and former United Nations commander Philippe Morillon has passed away at the age of 90. His death marks the end of a long career in both military and political service, during which he became known internationally for his role in peacekeeping operations.See more…
Morillon is best remembered for his leadership as commander of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR)in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1993. During this period, he oversaw UN forces amid the escalating conflict in the former Yugoslavia and became widely known for telling the residents of Srebrenica that they were “under the protection of the United Nations forces.”
Despite this declaration, Srebrenica fell to Bosnian Serb forces in 1995, resulting in the massacre of thousands of Bosniak men and boys. Morillon’s name has since been associated with debates over the limitations of UN peacekeeping mandates and the challenges of preventing atrocities in conflict zones.
After retiring from active military service, Morillon pursued a career in politics. He served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009, contributed to various committees, and continued public service work. He was honored with several distinctions, including the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour.
