Stevenson had a career spanning over four decades in film and television, earning recognition for his supporting roles in numerous popular productions. Beyond Will & Grace, he appeared in shows like Dynasty, L.A. Law, Cheers, and The Office, as well as films such as Men in Black, Pleasantville, and Ghost World.

His most famous role remained Smitty on Will & Grace, where he appeared periodically throughout the series. He became a beloved figure for audiences thanks to his humor and calm, warm presence on screen.

Before pursuing acting, Stevenson served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and later earned a degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation, he worked with humanitarian organizations before moving to Los Angeles to start his entertainment career.

He is survived by five children — Charles III, Valerie, Catherine, Scott, and William — along with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Stevenson was remembered not only for his artistic work but also for the humor and professionalism he brought to every supporting role he played
