Ballard formed The Supremes in 1959 in Detroit with her childhood friends Mary Wilson and Diana Ross. After signing with Motown in 1961, the group became a dominant force in popular music, producing a string of iconic hits including Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, and Stop! In the Name of Love. Ballard’s powerful lead vocals were central to the group’s early sound and success.
In 1967, Ballard was replaced in the group due to internal changes at Motown. Her solo career did not reach the same level of success, and in later years she worked various jobs while facing personal and financial challenges.
