The incident occurred late at night when a group of 18-year-old teens carried out a “prank” outside his home, throwing toilet paper across the yard—a common senior prank. When Hughes went outside to stop them, one of the teens accidentally struck him with a vehicle.
He was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries were fatal. The news of his death has deeply affected students, teachers, and the entire Hall County community.
The driver and four other teens have been arrested and face multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, trespassing, and other offenses related to the prank. Authorities described the incident as a tragedy that could have been avoided.
