Few actors in Hollywood have a face that’s as instantly recognizable, even if many people today don’t know his name. Van Cleef’s look — with piercing eyes and sharp features — might have seemed intimidating, but it was precisely this presence that made him one of the most memorable character actors ever. He appeared in more than 170 films and TV shows over nearly four decades.
He first appeared in film in High Noon (1952), playing a silent outlaw. For years he was cast as minor villains, but everything changed when the legendary director Sergio Leone chose him for major roles in the Dollars Trilogy.
In For a Few Dollars More, he stole scenes as Col. Douglas Mortimer, and in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly audiences worldwide came to know him as the cold, calculating Angel Eyes — a performance that has become iconic in film history.
Even outside Westerns, he appeared in popular movies like Escape from New York (1981), showing his range beyond the cowboy genre.
Van Cleef continued acting until the late 1980s. He died in 1989 at age 64, but his legacy lives on every time a new generation discovers those classic western adventures.
