Rescue teams were immediately deployed to locate the missing divers. Conditions inside the underwater cave system were described as extremely dangerous due to depth, limited visibility, and strong currents. One body was recovered early in the operation, while the remaining victims were located later as search efforts continued.

During the recovery mission, a second tragedy struck. A Maldives military rescue diver, who was part of the operation to retrieve the victims, died while assisting in the search. Reports indicate that he encountered serious medical complications during or after a deep dive.

Authorities later confirmed that the rescue diver likely suffered from decompression sickness, a life-threatening condition that can occur when a diver ascends too quickly, causing gas bubbles to form in the bloodstream. Despite emergency medical response, he could not be saved.

With the additional loss, the total death toll from the incident rose to six people. The victims include five Italian tourists and one Maldivian military rescue diver. Officials have stated that a full investigation is underway to determine exactly what led to the original diving accident and the fatal complications during the rescue operation.

The tragedy has been described as one of the most serious diving-related incidents in the Maldives in recent years, raising renewed concerns about the risks of deep technical diving and the safety protocols used during extreme underwater rescue missions.
