The 67-year-old actor shared the difficult news with fans in a post on X, explaining that he will be focusing on treatment and putting work commitments on hold for the time being.
Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those. It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock – it was to me too.”
“The good news is, I’m not gonna go into any more detail. I’m posting this, because professionally, a few things will have to change – appearances and cons and work in general need to take back seat to treatment. My plan is to get as well as I possibly can over the summer so that I can tour with my new movie ‘Ernie & Emma’ this fall.”
Campbell both stars in and directs Ernie & Emma, a road-trip comedy centered on a widowed pear salesman who sets out on a cross-country journey to scatter his late wife’s ashes. Per Variety, an early screening of the film in Portland, Ore., has already sold out, signaling strong interest from fans.
Bruce Campbell is an American actor, producer and director best known for his role as Ash Williams in the cult horror franchise The Evil Dead. Born on June 22, 1958, in Royal Oak, Michigan, Campbell began making Super 8 films with childhood friend Sam Raimi, a collaboration that would help launch his career.
He rose to fame with 1981’s The Evil Dead, later reprising his chainsaw-handed hero in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, as well as the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead. Known for his sharp wit and self-aware humor, Campbell built a devoted fan base through genre films, convention appearances and bestselling memoirs including If Chins Could Kill.
Beyond horror, he has appeared in numerous television series such as Burn Notice, where he played Sam Axe, and has made memorable cameos in several of Raimi’s films. Campbell has also directed films and television episodes.
