According to TMZ, Chase died on June 16 from meningitis and a blood infection, her boyfriend Roy Hernandez said. The outlet reported that she had been hospitalized in Los Angeles earlier this month due to malnutrition.
Two days before reports of her death surfaced, Daveigh Chase’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking support for the actress. In the fundraiser, Hernandez said Chase had endured a difficult childhood, become estranged from her family and faced bullying while living in Los Angeles. He said the couple found happiness together, but their lives changed when she was diagnosed with meningitis and multiple serious blood infections. According to Hernandez, doctors warned that her condition was critical and that she may not have much time left. He asked for donations to help provide Chase with comfort, stability and a safe place to call home during her final days, while also encouraging supporters to keep her in their prayers.
Chase rose to fame at a young age. She appeared alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2001 cult film Donnie Darko, playing his younger sister. She also found success as a voice actress, voicing Chihiro in the English version of Spirited Away and Lilo in Disney’s hit animated film Lilo & Stitch.
