Robert De Niro’s daughter, Airyn De Niro, has publicly come out as a transgender woman in an emotional and widely discussed interview. Airyn, who was born in 1995 as a fraternal twin, revealed that she began hormone therapy in November 2024. She described her earlier life as a constant attempt to fit into expectations from every direction — sharing that she often felt “too much” or “not enough,” whether it was about her body, her race, or her gender expression. She said these pressures made it difficult for her to understand her identity clearly, let alone live it openly.
One of the key influences that helped her embrace her identity, Airyn said, was seeing other trans women, especially Black trans women with different body types, speaking openly about their experiences. Representation, she explained, gave her the courage to begin her transition: “I want someone like me — Black, queer, and not extra-small — to know they can exist and be seen.”
Robert De Niro responded publicly with a heartfelt statement supporting his daughter. “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter,” he said. “I don’t know why this has to be a big deal. I love all my children.” His comments were widely praised for their clarity, compassion, and unconditional acceptance.
In a follow-up interview, Airyn spoke further about the “nonstop support” she has received from her father throughout her journey. She revealed that they have talked extensively about her transition, attended therapy sessions together, and worked closely to ensure that she felt understood and supported every step of the way. “I’m extremely grateful,” she said. “He has been there for me in every way.”
Airyn concluded her interview by reflecting on what it means to finally feel recognized. She said she spent years feeling “visible but not truly seen,” but now, for the first time, she feels aligned with who she is — both inside and out. Her story has since been praised as an important moment for representation and a powerful example of acceptance within families in the public spotlight.
