Police said the situation was isolated, and a suspect who is not a KSU student was taken into custody by campus police before additional officers arrived. The Frankfort Police Department confirmed that the response was swift, helping prevent further harm. Officials stressed that this was not a random act of violence and that the campus is now considered safe.
The shooting comes at a time of growing national concern over gun violence at schools and universities. Reports show that in 2024 alone, more than 100 shooting incidents occurred at K–12 and higher education institutions in the U.S., sparking fear and debate over firearm access, mental health challenges, and the pressures facing young people today.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the incident was not a mass shooting and called on the public to keep the victims, their families, and the campus community in their thoughts and prayers. University leaders emphasized their focus not only on physical security, but also on the emotional well-being of students during this difficult time
Founded in 1886, Kentucky State University is a historically Black institution serving more than 2,200 students. University President Dr. Koffi Akakpo assured students that they are supported and not alone, promising continued cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation continues and encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
